Welcome, interns!

Most interns don’t get coffee and make copies anymore (does anyone still make copies?).

Many modern internships aim to provide participants with hands-on experience that can impact the business and serve as talent incubators.

Motorola Solutions was recently named one of the country’s top internship programs by TA software firm Yello. (Don’t break out your hot pink Razr just yet—Motorola split into two separate entities, Motorola Solutions and Motorola Mobility, in 2011. Motorola Solutions has over 20,000 employees across 60 countries and focuses on public safety technology infrastructure.)

The company started its internship program in 2017 to recruit talent from Canadian and US colleges. This year, the program welcomed about 230 interns who will work at 20 offices and remotely. Around three-quarters of this year’s cohort is from underrepresented groups.

Motorola Solutions’ SVP of HR Karen Dunning recently shared with HR Brew how the company has structured its internship program.

Expert AI

LinkedIn will begin offering AI-powered learning opportunities based on the courses of some of its top business and professional experts in career development, business strategy, and well-being in a new pilot for its learning platform.

One of the instructors featured in this new program, Anil Gupta, a business strategist who teaches courses on LinkedIn Learning, said in a blog post about the pilot that this feature “will make it easier for instructors to scale their teaching and connect with even more learners.”

Learners will be able to directly chat with an AI whose answers are based on the experts’ LinkedIn Learning courses, as well as other published materials that the platform has access to to inform its responses.

Zoom out. AI is poised to transform learning and development and post-secondary education, Srinivasan said. Tools like the AI chatbots, informed by an expert’s vast knowledge of a specific subject, have “opened up a new style of learning.”

We support moms

A couch with books Grant Thomas

Moms deserve extra support—not least the 40.5% of moms with kids under 18 who are the “equal, primary, or sole income earners for their family,” according to the Department of Labor.

In her forthcoming book, Go Ask Your Mothers: One Simple Step for Managers to Support Working Moms for Team Success, Sarah Wells shares how HR pros and managers can better support, and retain, working moms.

Wells, who also owns a retailer specializing in products for new moms, shared with HR Brew insights from her book.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

What are some HR takeaways from your book?

Moms are not a monolith, we’re not all the same, and that’s why in the book I focus so heavily on initiating communication with the working moms on your teams to actually figure out what they need to feel supported in the workplace.
