Incentivizing care

Intel recently announced further investments in childcare benefits for its workers, part of an effort to attract and retain a more diverse workforce, as well as support career development for working parents.

When making changes to its childcare program, Intel consulted with the office overseeing the CHIPS and Science Act after the federal government asked companies applying for funding to detail how they will guarantee affordable, high-quality childcare to workers.

How Intel is building on its childcare offerings. Intel partners with a preferred childcare provider to offer eligible employees priority enrollment in their centers, as well as a tuition discount. It also offers emergency backup care, as well as a dependent care assistance program, a type of flexible spending account that goes toward the cost of care for a qualifying dependent.

It’s giving quirky

How would you describe Gen Z? Low-key pretty mid?

Some talent pros are taking to TikTok with dramatizations of how, in their view, Gen Z candidates behave in job interviews. Apparently when it comes to slang and oversharing, the youngest generation in the workplace is not holding back. While research suggests Gen Z values authenticity more than previous generations, some recruiters see their behavior as unprofessional.

As Gen Z outpaces Baby Boomers in the workforce, and is set to outnumber millennials by the early 2040s, according to Glassdoor, HR pros may need to rethink some traditional talent expectations.

Whatz going on? Gen Z entered the workforce during the Covid-19 pandemic, when many employers were primarily working remotely, Natalie Boren, an SVP at recruitment firm Career Group Companies, told HR Brew. As a result, some may not have learnt how to “put their best foot forward” professionally.

“We’ve seen people take interviews from their bed. We’ve seen people take interviews with a complete mess behind them in their apartment, or running errands in their car,” she said, adding that, “I’ve had somebody take an interview and not blur their screen, and there was drug paraphernalia in the background…I mean, it is outrageous.”

Changes in Canada

Canada is changing some of the rules of its Temporary Foreign Worker Program, just two years after the program was expanded.

Where in the world? The Temporary Foreign Worker Program began in 1973 as a way for employers to hire foreign workers for low-skill jobs.

As Canada’s economy recovered from the initial impact of the pandemic in 2021, employers struggled to fill vacancies, and in 2022, Prime Minister Trudeau expanded the program. Employers in high-demand industries such as manufacturing and hospitality were allowed to fill up to 30% of positions with foreign workers, a 20% increase. The number of workers allowed into the country under the program has nearly doubled, allowing 240,000 people in 2023, compared to 133,000 in 2021.
