You know the line in John Mellencamp’s “Jack & Diane” that goes, “Oh yeah, life goes on, long after the thrill of living is gone”? Well, some HR pros are singing along—only for them, the thrill of promoting is gone.
As traditional employee loyalty appears to diminish, some HR pros might think promotions will help retain workers. But a role bump can actually lead to “a nearly two-thirds increase in the risk a person would leave,” according to research from payroll services provider ADP. In fact, 29% of employees quit within a month of their first promotion.
One business professor shares how HR pros can help stop a promotion from leading to an employee’s resignation.
Why might employees quit? Two factors may contribute to this trend, said Victoria Grady, associate professor of organizational behavior at George Mason University’s business school. Employee promotions are more visible than ever before, she said, thanks to job updates on LinkedIn. Recruiters may notice these and use them to inform who they pursue.

Having access to pay as needed, rather than just on payday, is an enticing prospect for many employees.
Although about three-quarters of US employees say it’s important that employers offer earned wage access (EWA), aka on-demand pay, according to ADP data from December 2021 to January 2022, less than 8% currently have access to pay as they earn it, according to PayrollOrg’s 2023 “Getting Paid In America” survey.
Financial stress can negatively affect an employee’s work life, where it “can lead to increased absenteeism and tardiness, stress leaves, higher claims on benefit plans, employee turnover, decreased morale, as well as lower quality work, avoidable errors, and inabilities to focus on projects,” according to research by financial planning firm Savology. “Having employees who are financially stressed is proven to impact the bottom line, too.”

Dua Lipa isn’t the only one shouting about new rules. Germany is set to enact some new (employment) rules starting in November in an attempt to attract foreign workers.
Where in the world? Germany’s federal government approved a new set of laws over the summer known as the Skilled Workers Immigration Act. The legislation amends the Opportunity Residence Act of 2022, and makes it easier for companies to employ workers from outside the EU and for foreign workers to enter and stay in Germany. The country is aiming to attract skilled foreign workers and refugees to its workforce, according to EuroNews.
The legislation could bring up to 60,000 more workers to the country per year, EuroNews reported, which could help alleviate Germany’s ongoing labor shortage in industries including electrical engineering, IT, and healthcare.
As part of the new legislation, Germany will institute a points system to help decide who can enter the country for work purposes. The points are based on factors including a person’s job qualifications (such as training or certificates), professional experience, and connection to the country. People who qualify will receive an opportunity card, or as the government calls it, a “Chancenkarte.” The new legislation also allows some skilled workers to move to Germany before they have a job and stay for up to one year while they look for full-time work.
