RECRUITMENT & RETENTION

Leading with purpose

As employers look for new ways to recruit and retain talent, one strategy that has the potential to make a difference is value alignment—offering employees a mission beyond their day-to-day job that aligns with their values.

Over eight in 10 (82%) US professionals surveyed by LinkedIn from December 2022 to March 2023 said it’s important to work for a company where the culture and values are aligned with their own. Additionally, employees who feel value alignment with their employers are less likely to look for a new job, according to 2022 Qualtrics data.

The PenFed Credit Union, a financial services provider that originally served military members and their families, strives to offer its employees value alignment through a service-dog training program.

“Our mission is around service to our military, and this [program] just fits so well with our mission,” Nesa Helm, HR leader at PenFed, said. “From a culture perspective, it’s great and the employees like to get involved too.”

HR STRATEGY

StRRRategy

The acronym “RRR” most commonly stands for “reduce, reuse, recycle.” But for HR pros, it can also mean “recognition, recovery, renewal.”

Those three words are the basis for the employee well-being strategy at Accenture, Tamarah Duperval-Brownlee, the company’s chief health officer, said at the Workhuman Live conference last month.

Duperval-Brownlee, a former doctor, developed the strategy after joining Accenture in July 2021, nearly a year and a half after the Covid-19 pandemic had upended life as many knew it. She said she knew the health crisis would have lasting effects on people’s mental, physical, and financial well-being. This helped inform her well-being strategy and led her to focus on recognition, recovery, and renewal.

“A lot of things happened. We need to acknowledge that they happened. How they showed up needs to be accounted for,” she said.

HR STRATEGY

Successful experiment

A number of employers around the world have tried out four-day workweeks in recent years. In Turkey, one company just became the country’s first to not only trial the schedule, but adopt it permanently.

Where in the world? Aksa Akrilik Kimya Sanayii AS, an acrylic fiber company based outside Istanbul, recently said it would make its four-day workweek permanent, according to Fortune. The company began trialing a shortened workweek in 2023. Its 200 white-collar workers were given the opportunity to work a shorter week for the same salary and benefits, and were allowed to make their own schedule: Some took one day off a week, while others worked partial days. Aksa Akrilik hoped to see increased collaboration and operational efficiency.

Cengiz Tas, CEO of Aksa Akrilik, told Bloomberg that 94% of workers participated, and the company reported increased employee engagement, productivity, and work-life balance. Tas also said job applications have increased significantly.
