Happy FriYAY. You’ve no doubt felt the boiling temps outside, but what about inside? If your employees aren’t on PTO, they may be taking a “quiet vacation” or struggling to juggle kids home from school. Meanwhile, your managers may be trying to strike a balance between offering flexibility and keeping on task. Tensions can heat up quickly, so let’s do our best to keep a cool head.

Alphabet soup

Ever been in a meeting, heard a new acronym, and panicked? You’re not alone. In fact, you’re probably in good company.

Rather than slyly but frantically searching the term (probably on your phone under the table in the middle of the meeting) to get up-to-speed, HR Brew organized a glossary to keep you conversant in meetings about HR software and technology. No shame in bookmarking us!

HR Brew consulted two pros to help us digest this HR tech alphabet soup. George LaRocque is an industry analyst in the HR tech space, and founder of WorkTech. Erik Brynjolfsson, from the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI, is the co-founder of Workhelix, a tech company that helps businesses figure out how to leverage AI at work.

HCM. Human capital management is used to describe platforms that include processes throughout the entire life cycle of an employee, from hiring to exiting. LaRocque said customers might find an HCM doesn’t do everything well, so there may be opportunities to connect to other platforms.

Consulting firm PwC announced Tuesday its first US chief AI officer: company veteran Dan Priest, a partner who has led efforts on cloud and digital transformation strategy, and previously served as a CIO before joining PwC more than a decade ago.

“The role is decidedly client- and market-focused, although it includes the full scope of our business, and so our number one priority is to make sure that we’re trusted partners for our clients as they navigate this complex AI landscape,” Priest said.

In his role as CAIO, Priest said he will oversee the firm’s assurance, tax business, and advisory businesses as he bolsters existing offerings and develops new ones as the technology evolves.

Zoom out. And as Priest joins the C-suite at PwC, he’s also joining a growing number of executives responsible for overseeing the AI technology adoption across corporate America.

HR STRATEGY

Hey, millennial managers! How are you feeling?

Millennials have been the largest generation in the workforce since 2016, according to data from Pew Research Center. And as they’ve advanced in their careers, stepping into management roles, many have taken to TikTok to share their experiences as bosses.

Rick Hammell, founder and CEO of workforce management software company Helios, was inspired to document his journey as a millennial manager in his 2021 book, Getting Sh*t Done!: The Millennial CEO. Hammell, who started his career in HR, spoke with HR Brew about the value that millennials bring to the modern workplace, and the lessons he has learned as a young business leader.

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

What are some HR takeaways from your book?

HR is dynamic…there’s not really a rule book on how to do HR, because HR [is] all based on the culture that you’re looking at and implementing within an organization.
