New hires and newlyweds have one thing in common: The honeymoon phase. But your company’s new hires may be falling out of love with you a lot faster than recently betrothed couples.
Almost 40% of employees who’ve been with a company for less than six months plan to leave within the next 12 months, according to a report from experience management software company Qualtrics, a 6% jump from last year.
While new employees are typically the most happy and excited, Sarah Marrs, director of the employee experience product team at Qualtrics, told HR Brew, they’re often not being set up for success. She offered advice for how HR can help reverse the trend.
Why is this happening? New employees may be heading for the exit because they’re not getting the support they need after starting their new job, Marrs said. In fact, earlier this year, Qualtrics reported that 50% of CHROs called talent attraction and hiring a “very important” priority, and only 41% said the same about onboarding.

A recent McKinsey Health Institute survey of over 30,000 workers across 30 countries found that while mental well-being is high among employees in Turkey and China, those in Japan are struggling.
Where in the world? The survey examined burnout and holistic health—defined as encompassing “physical, mental, social, and spiritual health”—and found that the majority of workers have positive holistic health, and those with higher holistic health generally perform better and are more creative at work. Workers in Japan appeared to have the poorest holistic health, with just 25% reporting being in good holistic health, compared to Turkey, the healthiest, where 78% of employees reported the same.
Globally, 22% of respondents reported experiencing burnout, and 23% report having “mental distance,” or strong aversion or reluctance to work.
Employers that address workers’ holistic health may be able to help reduce burnout rates, according to the report. Furthermore, “employees who have strong holistic health may want to—and are better able to—work longer, which will be important for how employers approach an aging workforce.”

Most people feel like they could be a little healthier, whether by cutting down on sugar or doubling down on exercise. But what about being a little healthier in your approach to work?
Less than one-third (27%) of knowledge workers have a healthy relationship with work, according to a report from HP. The tech company surveyed over 12,000 knowledge workers, 3,600 IT decision-makers, and 1,200 business leaders in 12 countries.
HP’s chief people officer, Kristen Ludgate, told HR Brew how people leaders can maintain a healthy workforce.
What makes a work relationship healthy?
We found six characteristics. One, do they have a sense of fulfillment at work? Or a sense of purpose, a sense of agency, and [the knowledge] that they’re having an impact. Then, how do they feel about their leaders? This is building on the long-term trend in HR that an employee’s work experience day-to-day has a lot to do with the experience they have with the leadership of the company. Workers are looking for human leaders. People that are open—not perfect, but empathetic. Third aspect has to do with people-centricity. They want to be treated like a human being. Be respected, be trusted, and have autonomy. (They want to see that in their leaders, too.) Those three characteristics were general and maybe not surprising.
