Will Apple’s Vision Pro headset make waves in the workplace? Maybe.

Late last year, Meta and Microsoft announced a big partnership in the VR space, giving Zuck a software partner for his Quest headset, which he’d hoped would catch on in the workplace. On Monday, a new competitor emerged, from a brand that is loved by techies and creatives alike.

Nilay Patel of The Verge described the Vision Pro as “the best possible Meta Quest running something very much like iPadOS.” Patel said he was able to easily read text on a web browser, as well as view photos and videos with a 4K display for each eye. The Vision Pro will retail at $3,500, around triple the price of Meta’s Quest.

Joanna Stern of the Wall Street Journal called the workplace one of “just two compelling use cases for this thing.” The other was watching Avatar: The Way of Water in 3D.

Patel’s colleague, Tom Warren, points out that while Apple product manager Allessandra McGinnis called the Vision Pro “perfect for the office or for when you’re working remote,” its widespread adoption in workplaces remains uncertain, though he did say video calls should work well, and reviewing decks or other collaborative projects could work well.

TechCrunch praised the “personas” feature: “a workable digital avatar based off of just a scan of your face using the Vision Pro headset itself.” Reviewers also praised the functionality of being able to connect a Mac laptop to the Vision Pro display and use other apps alongside it.

VR has promised to alter how we work since the debut of the first Oculus headset a decade ago. Adoption has been minimal in the corporate realm, with some use cases in training and high-risk scenarios, but many enthusiasts remain bullish on the future of this tech, including Apple, judging by its latest offering.
