AI has transformed the way we work, play, and live. If you’ve used predictive text, clicked on an online restaurant rec, or played a video game lately, you’ve used AI tech.

And now it’s changing the way we recruit and hire. From screening candidate resumes to scheduling interviews, AI has officially entered the HR space.

So what will this actually mean for HR pros and the future of recruiting?

We turned to the AI in Hiring report, a collaboration between CareerBuilder and Morning Consult. They surveyed 400 HR decision-makers and recruiters for firsthand insights into their IRL experience with AI.

Come along as we dig into the impact of automation on everything from the quality of hires to candidate experience to the ethics of AI in hiring.

What’s new, hiring managers?

Thanks to its ability to streamline processes, AI is a welcome addition to the HR landscape. And it caught on fast: Almost three-quarters of the hiring managers surveyed are familiar with using AI in the recruiting process. And 50% say AI positively impacts the quality of hires, helping best-fit candidates get their resumes to the top.

Another stat for ya: 76% of respondents report that AI improves their recruiting processes. What does that actually look like in practice? Nearly half the organizations surveyed use AI throughout the hiring process to streamline:

  • screening large groups of candidates
  • analyzing resumes and applications for relevant keywords
  • scheduling interviews
  • onboarding new hires
  • sourcing candidates from job boards and databases

And that’s just the beginning. AI is relatively new to the hiring space, but there’s no shortage of possible applications for employers…or candidates.

The candidate experience

Let’s talk job candidates. 50% of respondents say AI speeds up the hiring process. And candidates are feeling its impact, especially when it comes to (helpful) AI chatbots and a simplified application process.

Smart screening and resume analysis help AI remove subjectivity and human biases from hiring. And it shows: 52% of respondents say AI connects applicants with jobs that best fit their experience.

But as with all new tech, skepticism is expected. Some candidates aren’t sure whether AI is here to stay or just a flashy new hiring trend.

Approximately 26% of candidates report being “somewhat resistant” or “very resistant” to the use of AI in hiring. Another 16% weren’t sure or had no opinion.

This leads us nicely to HR’s biggest concern about AI: the human element. Or, rather, the lack of it.

Finding the right balance

The biggest concern for orgs looking to adopt AI in their recruiting processes is how to balance automation with human judgment. After all, there are some things AI just can’t replicate (at least, not yet).

Nearly three-quarters of hiring managers surveyed see AI as an effective tool in assessing candidates’ skills. But 56% think it displays a lack of human connection and judgment, which leads to concerns about the quality and accuracy of data. AI isn’t perfect; it can’t read between the lines the way humans can. That means quality candidates sometimes slip through the cracks.

The answer, as expected, lies in finding the right balance. Recruiters are working on juggling AI-driven decisions with human judgment, but it’s no small feat. And while hiring managers and recruiters don’t report concerns about their jobs becoming obsolete, HR roles will likely become more specialized as the industry navigates working alongside AI.

Another issue? AI in recruiting is new, which means education and training isn’t universal or standardized. Most recruiters have received at least some training on how to effectively use AI, but 32% of respondents say they haven’t received any.

A massive 86% of recruiters report a need for more education and training on how to leverage AI effectively. How can HR pros bridge that gap? More education and better solutions—and that’s where CareerBuilder comes in.
